Cobram AGS Opens Yarning Circle
On 21 October 2024, we proudly opened our Yarning Circle, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture on Yorta Yorta Country.
The Yarning Circle is designed as an inclusive space for learning, sharing, and connecting with Indigenous culture. It offers opportunities for visitors to engage in storytelling, deepen cultural understanding, and spiritually connect with the land on which our school stands.
The opening ceremony featured a traditional smoking ceremony led by Uncle Eric, with Year 5 student Kadeyn Duggan joining him on the didgeridoo. Special guest Aunty Iris Troutman, CEO of Many Mobs Indigenous Corporation, emphasised the Yarning Circle’s role as a safe space for cultural exchange and collaboration. Indigenous students and staff later had the chance to "yarn" with Aunty Iris and Uncle Eric, honouring the tradition of knowledge-sharing.
Year 12 student Jett Robbins highlighted its cultural importance: “It’s the basis of how our culture is taught, learnt, and passed down. It’s a vital aspect of Indigenous life and promotes spiritual health.”
Cobram AGS Principal, Mr Keith Willett, added: “Our school is committed to reconciliation. The Yarning Circle will allow culturally important conversations in a space where everyone stands on equal footing.”
The Yarning Circle marks a significant milestone for Cobram AGS, fostering deeper cultural connections within the school community.
